Bundesliga’s hot & cold after return

German top tier soccer league Bundesliga returned to action after a two-month hiatus last weekend and provided some much needed entertainment for sports fans all around the world. If you are new to the league you can check out this article on how to pick a Bundesliga team to figure out who your new favorite squad. Nine games last week featured altogether 27 goals, which is a tad lower than the Bundesliga average goals scored per game, 3.24. That being said, the first round back featured a couple of impressive performances, with Dortmund beating lackluster Schalke 4-0 at home - even without the support of their infamous Yellow Wall stand – and Leverkusen added to Werder Bremen’s misery by grabbing a well-deserved 1-4 victory at Bremen’s Weserstadion.

League leaders and reigning champions for past seven seasons, Bayern München were not quite as impressive, but took a routine 0-2 victory over Union Berlin. In general, the top teams seemed better prepared for the return than their challengers, with only Hertha Berlin managing a win against higher placed opponent Hoffenheim. If you want to get a sneak peak on some of the Bundesliga predictions for match day 27 you can check that out at BetQL.

Bayern’s lead on top of the league is four points, with high-flying Dortmund the closest challengers. Dortmund ran over Schalke in the last round, but their next adversary is a tough one on the road: 6th placed Wolfsburg, unbeaten for seven games in Bundesliga since January 25th. Wolfsburg won Augsburg in their last bout, while Dortmund took the bragging rights in the team’s first meeting of the season back in November, winning 3-0. Wolfsburg looking for revenge is likely to put up a proper challenge at their home field and Accuscore’s simulations indicate a slightly better value for home win and the draw than Dortmund’s road victory.

Fifth placed Bayern Leverkusen will travel to Mönchengladbach to face 3rd placed Borussia. Both teams looked ready and set for the return and the game is expected to be both entertaining and evenly matched. The home team gets a slight edge in Accuscore simulations, trying to keep their two point difference to Leverkusen. From the top half teams, the most unimpressive in the first round back were definitely Schalke and Hoffenheim. Both teams were in trouble already before the lengthened break: Schalke had gone seven games without a win and Hoffenheim had won two out of their last eight. Schalke’s loss to Dortmund was expected, but the performance was abysmal nevertheless and they need to improve remarkably not to drop points to relegation candidates Augsburg.

Hoffenheim suffered a home loss to mid-table Hertha and the result was an ugly one, 0-3. Hoffenheim travel to face the bottom feeders Paderborn and have a great chance to bounce back from their abysmal home effort. Paderborn are not mathematically certain to get relegated, but the distance to safety is 10 points and their life-line is extremely thin.
